Amid hundreds of tourists a woman and her son quietly tossed five red roses over the fallen ship and then with tears in her eyes, she reached into her pocket and withdrew a small tin canister. Kate + David were married at Broadturn Farm, an amazing organic CSA not far from my home. Kate is a dancer and David is a writer. They live in NYC, so when they decided on a beautiful outdoor wedding in Maine, I'm sure the possibility of rain was far from their minds. But rain it did, a cold, hard rain. Not the type of rain anyone should have to get married in. But they were so graceful and excepting about the circumstances. Kate didn't stop smiling the entire day. I told them not to worry, the rain makes for some breathtaking images. I have a lot of experience shooting in hard weather conditions, thanks to my landscape photography background--when it's stormy, I'm chasing the light. Choosing an experienced photographer can make all the difference at your outdoor wedding, especially if the weather decides to not cooperate. Kate and David didn't have the sunlit field ceremony they had hoped for. Instead they smiled and moved their ceremony under their tent. I was not permitted to photograph the exchange of vows, for religious reasons, a first for me. But the moments in between were so moving, the joy this couple shares is legendary. While the sun didn't show her face, we had fields upon fields of blooming sunflowers to shine down on us and that was plenty. To Kate and David, I wish you all the joy in the world.

Every summer I make the time to return to one of my favorite places in Maine, Monhegan Island. I've been working on a book, shooting Monhegan over a period of five years, I hope to have it out by this Christmas season.

Monhegan is pure. simple. Maine. it's quirky, tempermental, and beyond beautiful.
It's also a beautiful place to consider being married, if you can hack a 10 mile ferry ride, limited luxuries, and some amazing views!

Monhegan Island + Light/Dark

Every year I spend a little time on Monhegan Island, Maine, resting and recharging. I was there over the 4th of July this year and had the most incredible time reflecting on my life, seeking inspiration from stillness and learning to listen to light. A trip to Monhegan is like coming home for me and it nourishes me in ways I never thought possible. My heart races each time the ferry pulls into the harbor. I swear the island breathes creativity. There is nothing boastful or pretentious about Monhegan, perhaps that's one of the reasons I adore it so much. It is luxurious in it's lack of the the technologies and convience that we are so habitually tied to.
Monhegan has a long and rich history of housing artists, it's become somewhat of a Mecca to anyone seeking beauty, bliss, and stillness from the madness of daily life. And like the tide, it pulls me back.

I took nearly 1,000 gorgeous shots that I'm just dying to share. But with my busy workload, it'll take some time. Good, good things are coming, I promise. For now here's a peak. The light changes so quickly on the island, I shoot sunsets in running shoes and chase down the moments that I'm quick enough to catch. This one was taken, en route back from from shooting one of the most beautiful sunsets I've ever seen. It's The Island Inn. I will post more on Monhegan, throughout the summer. So keep checking back often and please visit Monhegan soon.

Tomorrow I am off to Peaks Island to shot the wedding of Marci and Chris. I am filled with love and gratitude tonight. My camera is an extension of my soul and tonight, it's overflowing.

A Maine Sailing Adventure + Surprise Reunion

Last week my friends and I decided to take a sunset sail aboard the Maine-made windjammer, Frances, chartered through Maine Sailing Adventures out of the Maine State Pier. The weather was absolutely perfect and we couldn't think of a better way to celebrate the end to a wonderful day. I feel very fortunate to live in Maine, surrounded by the ocean. Maine is really an artist's dream and I have a canvas in my own back yard!

It was my second time sailing with MSA. (By the way, they do WEDDINGS! Speak to Meg for details) I had gone a year ago in late June and loved it. I got some amazing shots that trip (they are the first two shots in this post), despite the overcast sky and chilly wind. So this time around I was ecstatic that the weather was cooperating. With my camera ready and my sea legs sandled feet I climbed aboard Frances, eager to push off for a beautiful two hour sail.

Through the lens of my camera people always look familiar. Sometimes even strangers appear like old friends, so I was not at all surprised that when I saw the Captain for the first time, I immediately thought we had met before. He must have thought I was crazy, because I continued to stare (politely of course) trying to remember how I knew him, or if it was the heat or sun messing with my mind.

Then it hit me...

The Captain's name was Shawn and a little less than a year ago, I actually photographed his gorgeous seaside wedding in Phippsburg, Maine. He has his reception at the Maine Maritime Museum. At the time, he was living in Rhode Island. Portland was the last place I ever expected to see him, especially on Casco Bay.

I was so surprised and happy to see him again. After cheerful hellos and hugs, he offered my friends and I Izzy Pom Soda's and then gave me a quick sailing lesson. While I didn't manage to sink the ship, I think I better stick to what I do best. Sorry Jack Sparrow, I'll not be sailing the Jolly Roger anytime soon.

Jess + Will, Candida Woods, NH

I first photographed Jessica and Will back in August of 2007 for their engagement session. A year later, I was back with them again, this time for their wedding at Candida Woods in NH. On the first day of summer, bathed in the early evening light, they exchanged vows in an intimate garden ceremony. I'm so grateful to have been a part of their journey.

Kirsten + Jason, The Harrington Farm, MA

My sister, Kirsten married her soul mate Jason on January 4th, 2008 at the Harrington Farm, in Princeton, MA. As the sun sank behind the white horizon, I watched, teary-eyed as my only sister, stepped in front of a mirror to attach a veil, her dress hugging her the way she used to follow me around the backyard when we were young- close, graceful, with intention.

She was beautiful and nervous as she looked back over shoulder at Dad, one last time, for approval. My shutter snapped.

The bridesmaids and I, laughed as she applied lip-gloss and then carefully tucked it inside her dress--for later, there she also carried a streamer of blue satin ribbon. Being in the wedding party, I was unable to take many shots. My sister hired a wonderful traditional photographer to capture what I couldn't, but that didn't stop me from having my camera waiting for me under my seat at the altar. I asked her if I could take five shots during the ceremony--five was all I needed. Five was perfect, since my eyes were fiercely trying to hold off tears. For the moments I did find, I'm greatful. I wish Kirsten and Jason all the Joy the world can deliver them.

A Winter Wedding Shower

Tis' The Season For Winter Weddings! While Spring and Summer remain the most popular seasons for weddings, Winter offers a unique and beautiful array of possibilities for planning a wedding. Getting married in the winter months can also translate into HUGE savings, as many wedding vendors offer off-season discounts.

On November 17th I was delighted to photograph my sister' winter-themed shower. With the big date nearly a month away, the rush to plan a classy but casual shower for Kirsten fell into the creative hands of my aunt and mother. The idea came about to transform a garage into a banquet hall complete with Art Gallery--many of the pieces that were displayed were painted by my Aunt Carol, who spends her summers painting in maine. At my mother's request, a small print of my award-winning photograph- lovers was displayed.

The day was magical, the decor-beautifully 'MAINE' and the moments capured were priceless.

I met Lisa and Scott at Pineland Farms on a beautiful October afternoon. The were up from

Boston visiting family and had

scheduled an engagement session with me. I had recommended Pineland for the shoot and found out later their were briefly considering it for their wedding this summer. Lisa was absolutely stunning, at times I felt like I was shooting a movie star straight out of 1950’s Hollywood. Her Fiancé, Scott, was so wonderful. I know how awkward it can be for some, but Scott was a real trooper the entire afternoon. Lisa is having a silk-screening artist design invitations and custom postage from one of the photographs. What a great idea! I love it, especially because the designer is a

fellow Etsy artisan! I am really looking forward to seeing these two again at their wedding next year. It’s sure to be one stylish, fun, event full of laughter and smiles. Go Sox!!!

Rocking Out With Midnite Social

I recently took a brake from the cake cutting, ribbons, romance, and lace of a typical weekend and let my hair down a bit to shoot Midnite Social, a hot, new band straight out of Bean Town. They just launched their new LP and needed promo stills. I convinced them to drive to Maine to work with me. They were so much fun to shoot and they didn't mind getting dirty or scaling roof tops! Hopefully we'll see them in Portland soon, their sound is just too just to not share. I look forward to shooting them live in concert sometime in te near future.

Jess + Will Engagement

When Jess asked me if I would be willing to travel to shoot her engagement session at the exact the place where her fiancé, Will, proposed I said "absolutely"! It's not everyday that I have the opportunity to shoot an engagement session at the 'scene of the crime' and it's not everyday that I get to work with couples like Will and Jess! Their love absolutely radiates from them. They walked alone the beach, hand in hand, sharing smiles and laughter, and at times it seamed like the just forgot I was there—those are the moments I aspire to capture! Maybe it was the nostalgic location or the cool August breeze, but shooting these two was pure magic. Jess and Will appreciated their photographs so much; they have booked me for their wedding next June. I look forward to seeing this wonderful couple next summer.

it was a month they will never forget-

This special couple holds a close place

in my heart. Kirsten is my only sister.

She met Jason in Army ROTC and it was love at first site.  (I think it was the uniform)

Even though I photograph weddings

all the time, I was completely moved to tears

when my sister, Kirsten, asked me to be her

maid of honor and her photojournalist for

her winter destination wedding in MA this January.

Dear Friends,

I did it! finally managed to salvage enough free time time to launch my very own blog. It's been four months in the making and on the top of my to-do list for just as long. So my house is still half- painted and my floor still a trendy plywood waiting for some hardwood but I have a blog-
finally. Life is Good!

Isn't it funny how life has a way of keeping you from those things that just need to get doen? I've been so busy with weddings and commercial work that I just could never find the time to get this baby going. Well it's an ideal no longer! I'm officially staking claim in my own little corner of the blog sphere attempting to introduce myself, my work and my simple and stunning approach to photography and life. Who knows, if all goes well, it would be wonderful to reconnect with past friends and make new ones along the way.

So welcome to my Blog!

Since I had intended on posting back in May, I figure a recap of my summer is a wonderful place to begin, especially now that fall is here. So without further adieu, here is Summer 2007, A Look At Life Behind My Lens.....
